Could you imagine. A Pokémon region where you really had the choice to face each gym in the order you choose. And the teams would alter based on that progress. Could even make the mons scale with you with something simple in-universe “Pokémon here seek our worthy trainers, the level of the pokemon you meet match the team you travel with.” Giving another layer to spawn pools with only certain ones appearing with the right team.

I like how they did this in Scarlet and Violet. You get to fight the gym leaders again with their best teams after you've become the new champion, as a sort of evaluation for their position.

sword and shield actually did this very well in my opinion, they had their normal fights which were weaker for us but for the League they fought with their full powered teams

I guess none use 6 even if they are the 8th gym badge you need because they have lower level pokemon for the beginner challengers as well as their strong pokemon for the later challengers

I think the games would of been way better if all the gym leaders were level 50, that you had to go around and train and follow a story. All the gym battles seem like side quests and not actually very important to the story
