@birdlifemalta: From an aviary to the open Mediterranean: this is Fiona’s story 🦩 Fiona the flamingo was taken from the wild and kept illegally in a hunter’s aviary. Thanks to a report made by BirdLife Malta, following a tip-off from a member of the public, she was confiscated by ERA with the assistance of the EPU and WBRU in July 2023. She then spent just over a year at BirdLife Malta’s rehabilitation facilities, awaiting court clearance. In September 2024, Fiona was released back into the wild in Sicily at LIPU’s Saline di Priolo. Fitted with a solar-powered GPS tracker, she began her journey — moving along Sicily’s eastern coast, travelling to Tunisia and back, and recently settling in southern Sicily within the nature reserves of Pantani Cuba and Longarini and nearby lagoons managed by Stiftung Pro Artenvielfalt. Greater Flamingos can live for over 30 years and travel widely across Mediterranean lagoons. We’re grateful to be part of Fiona’s return to the wild and to continue following her journeys.
