If your child cannot READ and WRITE by 3rd grade, you should be SCARED! If your child cannot critically think or problem solve by 5th grade, you should be SCARED! Take away the electronics. Be involved in their lives. Please! As an educator, for your own kids sake and future, PLEASE do this for them!

I used to hate that my parents didnt get me a phone when all my friends had one growing up, but im pretty sure im the only one out of my friend group that has actually sat down and read a book in the past 2-3 years.

I know covid had a part in this decline but I think the real issue is dropping phonics and trying to teach a new method that clearly isnt working.

My Mom had me practicing my handwriting by rewriting sentence by sentence from an encyclopedia 😆 it worked, and now I know way too much about the Native Americans, submarines, and fruit 😆😆😆😆

Anecdotally as a 7th grade teacher I’m seeing reading skills improving and less grown up iPad kids. 3 years ago my classes could not have done the activities we are doing now. Hopefully this trend continues as we recover from COVID.

Excessive screen time + not reading at home is destroying these kids’ brains. They don’t know how to be inventive with their time anymore. They don’t know how to be bored or how to exist without some form of constant stimuli.
