It provides compressed air to the aircraft's pneumatic start system when the APU or onboard bleed air sources are unavailable or not used. An ASU essentially operates like a small jet engine that generate the required air pressure and mass flow. When connected to the aircraft, the ASU delivers compressed air to the air starter, which converts pneumatic energy into mechanical torque to rotate the engine core, typically the high-pressure spool (N2). In CRANK mode, the engine is rotated by the starter without fuel or ignition. This dry motoring is used for oil circulation, ventilation, and maintenance tasks such as leak checks.
