I know that's technically from the last song in Hadestown but Hermes says essentially the same thing at the start. You KNOW it's gonna end badly from the get go and yet you're still surprised and devastated when Orpheus turns around.

Yes, thank you! People are very obsessed with the idea that a story is somehow ruined if it’s spoiled for them. But honestly, I’ve found people are farrr more engaged with things like Shakespeare and other early modern or older texts when they already know what happens. And having it in the text itself creates great dramatic irony.

hadestown does it beautifully right at the beginning of the play they're very upfront of it being a tragedy, but you still want to watch just to see if it turns out good this time

I think that if spoilers matter more to you you're about moments over substance. I can watch Casablanca a million times and never get tired of it but I will never watch Infinity War again

Yeah, ive noticed a lot of criticism for sunrise on the reaping because "theres no twist end". We know haymitch wins. We knew from him being a mentor. Its the journey of how we got to this point. It informs his decisions in the rest of the books especially because katniss is an unreliable narrator who doest know why haymitch is the way he is

Hot(?) take: trailers are the modern day equivalent of Shakespearean prologues. Trailers tell you just enough to know what its about, and some even tell you all of the major plot points.

Spoiler culture *way* predates the MCU. As far back as 1960 Alfred Hitchcock was begging people not to spoil the end of Psycho, this has been around a long time it definitely doesn’t come from Marvel

Yes! People always apologize for spoilers for me and I'm always like "oh I don't mind knowing the what, I like the how" unless it's somehow like a mystery? But i still don't mind. 🤷♀️

Moulin Rouge does this! I watched it with some friends for the first time and they FORGOT that at the beginning, the movie “spoil” the ending and my friends were SO MAD at the ending. I was like “they TOLD you!” And that’s how you do a story.

It adds so much to know from the beginning that they’re doomed, and to fall in love with the characters anyway. My favorite way of storytelling by far. To watch or read with bated breath going “well it can’t be!” Like YES

Thank you! I was trying to explain this when I went to see Hadestown because the opening song does something very similar. There is beauty to be found in the story being told and messages that are so nessessary to the audience, it doesnt matter how it ends we're going to keep retelling it. If only for the chance that this time it will end differently
