every character on every sitcom is a villain if they were a real person

If anybody needs to declare a member of that group "the villain" and they don't choose Barney "I might have sold a woman" Stinson to fill that roll... I'm not sure i trust their judgment

In my opinion Ted was supposed to be a representation of how most people can't see their own flaws. Lily was a representation of going with the flow until it's inconvenient and realizing you can't just stop once you start. Barney was a representation of impactful events changing you fundamentally as a person. Marshall was a representation of the good and bad of strong, tangled relationships. Robin was a representation of the concept of self-dependency, and the line between it and isolation.

Bull Moose Lodge :
With the exception of Marshall, every main character, Ted, Robin, Lily and Barney all had a type of "villain arch"

Now let’s talk about New Girl and how the main character is really Schmidt… at least in my head 😂

You also have to recall that HIMYM is told from Ted’s perspective as well, so the theory that he demonized Barney isn’t outside of the realm of possibility, I’m not saying he’s a villain at all (either of them) but Ted could be talking himself up and others down

People have lost their ability to see these nuances in real life too. They think people in their lives are “villains” when in reality most people are just people who sometimes do bad things

People have lost the ability to like characters that are problematic (by 2025 standards) because there’s this rampant idea on the internet of “guilty by association”. So if someone admits they like Ted Mosby, there are swarms of people waiting to project all of Ted Mosby’s problematic traits onto that person.

I love how people will bash HIMYM because the characters are "bad people" but then rave about Seinfeld. You can just say you learned you liked sitcoms in the 90's, that's ok.

Same people who say Ross is the villain of Friends, another great sitcom with human characters with several flaws but doesn’t make them unlikable, but very flawed.

yes! I love how I met your mother!! too often people forget we watch these to be entertained not to watch everyday life. The only thing I don't approve of is they missed where they led their own story. yes I know it was supposed to end that way but the story changed Barney and Robin were always end game.

What were Marshall's flaws though... other than being a Vikings fan.

I think Ted personally was self indulged and over romanticizing in a way that hindered him and it annoyed me. So no he’s not a villain but Imo he made it a bit unlikable

For me, none of the characters in any sitcom are villains, they are however fictional characters meant to entertain me.

I literally never watched any of the sitcoms, as my preferred genre was fantasy/adventure that I fed with anime, manga, and fanfiction outside of books.

I think this started from people realizes how much Ross from friends sucked. And like friends didn’t glorify Ross to the extent that people think it did but also Ted is way way better than Ross. Still did awful things but better than Ross
