This why I hate the term ai being used for generated “ai” art, that’s just an overrated copy and paste machine that steals art

Yeah "AI" in modern discourse has become a word detached from its origin, mostly meaning large generative text/image/video models to the general public. For instance my research is on applying AI to effeciently search and optimize chemical spaces and i almost always say ML (machine learning) when talking to people outside the field to avoid hate. As a broader question, when things like this happen do you think scientific speech should change with general language to make it more accesible?

80% of what I see is “Damn capitalist AI, who will buy the arts from humans if it’s being made more cheaply(and worse) by robots? People wouldn’t make things without a profit incentive!” Which is several layers of irony

I just wish critics of AI would focus on the one aspect that really matters: its potential to undermine and disrupt human labor. I'm tired of appeals to half baked theories of human creativity or complaints about environmental impact or jokes about how bad it is. AI gives the capitalist another lever of power. The problem is its use, not its existence

The "stealing" (copyright violation) is also not really an intrinsic necessity of any of modern forms of AI, it's just a shortcut. There are models trained with data from ethically sourced datasets, including public domain, creative commons or licensed media, using the same architectures

There is nothing wrong with using into make art. Ai is just a tool that we can use to make art that we normally couldn’t because of lack of artistic ability.

people talk about hating AI and then love an app because the feed is AI curated, all their favorite games have AI opponents, use autocorrect and spell check...

So much of the worlds population fails to have any nuance on anything and more than anything else the problem. If people could have more nuanced opinions and understanding of topics, more effective communication could happen, and that could result in steady real change over time. Without it, people are constantly talking past each other from different locations.

Yeah, people don't realize that there are really valuable purposes for machine learning other than just the modern corporate AI slop, and they talk about AI as if the slop is all there is.

In college back in the 80s I took AI courses. Back then we were programming in Lisp and Prolog, expert systems were all the rage. AI, at least in computer science, has been around for a long time.

when we say AI you are hearing 'all machine learning' when we mean 'large LLM's of the last 5 years'

Yes AI as a study has been around for as long as computers, yes it hws appications such as moving imps around in DOOM, and detecting cancer. However, we all know, and as you stated in this video itself, it WAS within the last 5 years that the term AI has been expanded to cover the things you've stated you're against. When the tech bro people are just calling it AI, that's the term people use. It's not personal, and I'm sorry your interest got warped into this, but don't get mad at the people trying to survive. The semantics of this discussion are imperfect and frequently used against creators to derail any debate at all. You're railing against the wrong people.

you know. my biggest question to people who hate gen ai is: say we fix all the ethical issues with ai. the environment stuff isn't an issue anymore, the gen ai isn't built on stolen art anymore but instead donated or sold art. would these people still hate gen ai? and ifso, why? in my eyes if they did still hate it, its for no other reason then there jealous that people can make "art" without having to sacrifice years of there life to a legitimately hard skill to learn, a skill that often leaves the creator feeling awful about themselves for years until there skill levels finally match the creators expectations. i dont think Enough people think about this hypothetical situation, or how theyd respond to it were it to happen.

again you are mixing up terminology, the word AI has evolved, when we say something like 'AI is all bad and shouldn't be used' we arent talking about machine learning algorithms that have been around for decades, we mean the large LLM's of the past few years
