a couple of thoughts: Dr Ingalls discovered a treatment that either prolonged his life or cured him. or, his body was returned to Walnut Grove to be buried, and the he was given the honorary title of Dr by the town. the second is far more plausible.

Thoughts: He did come "home again." He successfully fought hard to complete medical school, became a doctor...and was laid to rest in the cemetery adjacent to the town that was no more. His headstone: Dr Albert Engels...😞
