Yeah I mean didn't jorge just admit this? Like he has said the inspiration for Epic is Anime and Video games, like its what he was going for

this is a nitpic but it makes me so mad bcs WHY aren't the sirens bird women?? why aren't they birds?? why are they typical mainstream fish sirens that change form to lure you into the water?? THE SIRENS FROM THE ODYSSEY ARE SO MUCH COOLER??

i think it shows with Circe when she said mortals can get molly and he responded "I must be a god like you" like that's hubris, very bad for greeks

He is such an obvious power fantasy. writing a main character who defeats God will never come across as not being a power fantasy! especially if they do it alone. if Odysseus was a woman, people would have called him a Mary Sue.

I feel like 600 strike and Odysseus defeating Poseidon is the worst narrative choice of Epic. Not only does it go other myths say about challenging the gods and how that will always end badly for the mortal (thinking specifically of Arcane) but also it goes against the fact that in The Odyssey Odysseus is told that he’ll have to go on a quest specifically to appease Poseidon. If I remember correctly Odysseus went to the underworld to know how to escape Poseidon’s wrath, not because he was lost

also it doesn’t even make sense that he “becomes” ruthless in the Odyssey. he was already a ruthless war criminal in Troy.

yeah, I actually do quite like most of the concept album, but 600 strike REALLY can't be overlooked at all. No amount of intentional cognitive dissonance can make me like anything about it, it's SO ridiculous. As well as how little Pen and their son is present....

It’s unfortunate because Odysseus having vulnerable moments in which he actually isn’t 100% reasonable would’ve added so much to the whole monster theme. Everything he does is justified, that’s not a monster 🤔

As a Musical theater student the book needs major work. It’s fun as is but that’s all it feels it can functionally ever be. It needs a script, multiple songs cut, and a VERY creative director. Lin Manuel Miranda has everyone thinking that neo-musicals have to be operatic talk-sing-icals

IMO my biggest grudge against the musical is that wyflilwma isn’t a song or the ending we deserve because Odysseus hasn’t earned the likability of the audience and Penelope was underdeveloped as a character, it literally just feels like Jorge treated Penelope as Eliza from Hamilton and the ending STILL doesn’t make sense going beyond that fact like how does this fit in with the rest of the musical again it feels like Jorge tried to make the ending like Hamilton (wlwdwtys).

As someone who's only aware of Epic! The musical through tiktok (involuntarily) I always found it so WEIRD that odysseus thought of himself as this changed, horrible, iredeemable person in that song where he reunites w his wife because like... What was the big drama? He was cool guy, then he was cool guy w sirens, then he was cool (and loyal) guy on an island, etc. etc. etc.

Another critique of it is that it would be horrible to actually make a stage play bacuse EVERY part is a song, so many different sets and so many different background characters, as well as it’s so long, and in order to possibly make it shorter you would have to cut away some of the songs, but since every action happens in song what would you cut away? There’s a lot more to discuss but that’s all I could remember off the top of my head

these kind of changes also completely undercut Odysseus and hubris, which is such a key concept for not just his character but Greek stories/society too. by doing the ear wax trick in order to find information he needs, it removes his hubris of wanting to hear what they sing and then ultimately falling for the song for a situation to make him look smart and cool. like Odysseus is smart and thats important, but his arrogance is ALSO extremely vital. there are so many situation he gets into bc of his ego (polyphemus and poseiden, interacting w so many gods, etc). and i get when you adapt something there are gonna be changes, but you can't ignore an entire character aspect in doing so. its literally his fatal flaw. I really like epic, but thats one of my biggest qualms. like Odysseus is not supposed to be a cool likable guy

Whenever I read or studied the original I always felt that Odysseus was a bit cool (maybe not *cool* as in likable but definitely awe-inspiring and badass. like "wow... he's actually going for this. wow") for taking on the suitors as he did and ngl it kinda falls flat in Epic because it comes like 3 songs after he turned a God into a blob with his own weapon. Like of course he's going to destroy the suitors duh he's stronger than Poseidon
