My husband and I had separate finances as well. We both make good money. We split all our bills 50/50 and any large purchases are discussed before hand. And then what’s left is our own to spend as we like. It works for us and we are transparent about what each person has in their personal account.

it sounds like he hasn't bailed her out yet. I'd suggest covering some payments to ensure she doesn't go to collections or get repo on the car but make her cover the rest.
