After completing all 12 “gifts” (life lessons like work, friends, giving, and love) assigned by his late grandfather Red Stevens, Jason has profoundly changed from a spoiled playboy into a compassionate man.
During this journey, he befriends Emily, a young girl with terminal leukemia (played by Abigail Breslin), and her mother Alexia. Emily becomes a key influence on Jason, teaching him about true friendship and joy despite hardship.
In the climax, as Jason presents his plan to build “Emily’s Home” — a facility to help children with serious illnesses — Emily succumbs to her cancer and dies. This devastates Jason and others, highlighting the bittersweet nature of his growth.
Having exceeded his grandfather’s expectations, Jason receives the “ultimate gift”: a massive inheritance (controlling interest in a $2 billion estate). More importantly, the real gift is the personal transformation and values he’s gained.
The film ends on a hopeful note with Jason and Alexia together, honoring Emily’s memory — symbolized by a butterfly landing near them, representing her enduring spirit. Jason uses his wealth for good, continuing the legacy of generosity.
