The Blessing: Origin, Evolution, and Scope according to the Hebrews 1. Origins and Primitive Conception Originally, like the curse, the blessing was perceived as a spiritual process belonging to the realm of “magical control.” The Hebrews, like many peoples of Antiquity, believed in the secret power of the spoken word, capable of bringing about the events it announced. Among the Assyrians, words had almost the same value as actions. For Muslims, the words of a saint are effective even without conscious intention. As for the prophets of Israel, they were convinced not only of announcing the future but also of bringing it into reality (1 Kings 17:1; Jeremiah 1:10; 3:12). 2. Power and Consequences of Words Once spoken, blessing or curse acquires a real existence and tends to be fulfilled, even if it does not correspond to the actual intentions of the speaker (Numbers 22:6; Genesis 27:33; 27:40). This conviction explains certain cultural precautions: In the Psalms, avoiding a sad ending by closing with a blessing. The messenger announcing a death uses coded language to avoid uttering the fatal word directly, or he transforms the bad news into a blessing (2 Samuel 18:27-32). 3. Transition from Magical to Religious In the Old Testament, the magical character of blessing gradually fades in favor of a religious interpretation: it becomes a wish in favor of another, granted by God. However, certain magical traces persist: Absolute effectiveness attributed to words. Triple invocation of the divine name (Numbers 6:24-26), based on the belief that repeating three times renders a word irrevocable (Joshua 22:22; Isaiah 6:3). Reinforcement by adding epithets and attributes (Genesis 48:15 and following). Men of God (priests, seers, prophets) were perceived as particularly suited to bless (Exodus 17:11-13; Numbers 23-24; Judges 5:12; Deuteronomy 33:1). The priest blesses the sacrificial meat (1 Samuel 9:13) and closes worship with the priestly blessing, a formula later adopted in synagogue and Christian liturgy. 4. The Actors of Blessing in Israel’s History Before the exile, priests did not have exclusivity: kings also blessed the people (2 Samuel 6:18; 1 Kings 8:55). The father blesses his children before dying (Genesis 27:10 and following; Genesis 48:8 and following). This paternal blessing, heir to ancestor worship, was considered particularly powerful. Relatives bless a traveler or a newlywed couple (Genesis 43:14; 24:60; Ruth 4). 5. Content and Objectives In the Old Testament, blessing primarily concerns material goods: long life, numerous descendants. In the New Testament, it shifts toward spiritual goods (Ephesians 1:3; 1 Peter 3:9). 6. Protective Function and Explanation of Events Blessing sometimes serves to annul a curse (Exodus 12:32; Judges 17:2) or to divert the consequences of a disastrous act (2 Samuel 3:28). Certain realities or events are explained by an ancient blessing: Holiness of the Sabbath (Genesis 2:3) Fruitfulness of men and animals (Genesis 1:22, 1:28; renewed after the flood, Genesis 9:1) Numerical superiority of Ephraim over Manasseh (Genesis 48:13-19). 7. Blessing as a Literary Genre By describing the national greatness and privileges of Israel through poetic blessings placed in the mouths of dying ancestors, Hebrew poets created a literary genre. Primitive form: a few verses integrated into tradition (Noah: Genesis 9; Isaac: Genesis 27). Elaborate form: independent artistic poems (Jacob: Genesis 49; Moses: Deuteronomy 33; Balaam: Numbers 23-24).
