I don’t support the dangerous or reckless driving you sometimes see. But riding these buses is a very normal part of daily life in Sri Lanka, and this reel simply reflects my real experiences (with a little sarcastic humour thrown in 😂). Riding the crazy public buses in Sri Lanka means many things… and putting this together reminded me just how chaotic these trips really are. Expect: • Overtaking into oncoming traffic 😅 • Racing other buses to pick up passengers • Jumping on and off while the bus is still moving because full stops “waste time” 🙈 (If you have luggage, you might get 20 seconds… be fast 😂) • Karaoke entertainment if you’re lucky (or unlucky 😝) • Snacks delivered to your seat at stops - vendors then jumping off before the bus speeds up again • Near misses… lots of harsh braking and sudden accelerating. Depending on the driver you’ll have a great time, or you’ll feel seasick. • Occasionally heroic drivers protecting people from elephants trying to steal food 🐘 • Open doors and windows = fresh air (and LOTS of dust 😂) • Super cheap rides (though the price depends on the ticket guy lol) • Possibly the fastest way to travel the country 😅 P.S. Every time I got off the bus I was covered in dirt, especially my face 😂 I swear it just flies in through the open doors and windows. Pro tip: bring wet wipes! ‼️ These buses can be wild. They often drive very fast and unpredictably, so please be careful, especially if you’re walking near roads or driving a scooter. If you hear a bus coming… move 😅 If this isn’t your vibe, the train is a calmer option.
