Romance authors now really forget that their characters need to connect emotionally before any physical action happens it’s the only way for us readers to believe the romance they are trying to sell , like u said they need to get to know each other and connect on those levels and keep building their relationship.

I think this is why the whole “fated mates” Romantasy trope falls SO flat for me because that’s the justification for pushing two characters together, like some divine intervention that forces them to be in love regardless of if there actually IS connection and chemistry…. Like. It feels so *rushed* to me so much of the time, and the whole thing about the 1000 year old fae man falling for the human girl - I just struggle with it so bad 😭

I have the opposite problem. My characters like each other so much that when they are separated and then reunited years later it's really hard to write them being awkward and distant with each other. It feels so unnatural that I almost get writer's block 😭 It's important to the story though.

I’m struggling with the connection a little bit in my romance. It’s a summer workplace romance. And they are pretty sure they won’t see each other after the season ends. So while they want to get to know each other, they are also holding back because they don’t want to get too connected. If that makes sense.

omg, that also explains why so many people love monster Romance! because the more alien and inhuman the love interest is, the more you need to be curious and connect with each other to fall in love!

I think I've moved away from writing romance into relationship drama with a side of affection *because* the real dynamic, juicy, and sometimes ugly parts of a real relationship are glossed over or omitted from so many stories today.

The best test you can have is the phone number test. Generally speaking, at what point did your character exchange “phone numbers” and what did that look like? Why would your character give their phone number to the other? Is it because they want to? Is it because they have too? Ask your self these questions and if you don’t have a good answer then go back and fill in this missing piece. Keep it mind it doesn’t have to be a phone number. It could be any little thing related to the other.
