شجرة السم وهي قصيدة قديمة كُتبت بالقرن الثامن عشر، كتبها "ويليام بليك" يصف بها المشاعر المكبوتة لدى الراوي تجاه نفسه. وتشير القصيدة للقارئ إلى أن قمع الغضب أمر خطير من الناحية الأخلاقية، ولا يؤدي إلا إلى المزيد من الغضب والعنف، وتدور حول أن عدم مواجهة غضبنا ومشاكلنا يمكن أن يتفاقم مع الوقت ويجعلنا نشعر بالمرارة والبرود، مما يترك بشكل أساسي شجرة السم التي تمثل الغضب والألم والاستياء التي تنمو بداخلنا. وصف غضب ويليام على أنه ينمو إلى شجرة تحمل تفاحاً ساماً، ثم يأكل عدو المتحدث تفاحة من الشجرة ويموت. كانت ابتسامات المتحدث والمكدرات اللطيفة الأخرى تستخدم لإخفاء الغضب، ولكنها في الواقع تؤدي إلى زيادة حدة الغضب وبمعنى أدق: إذا تركت الصراع ينمو أكثر فأكثر فقد يكمن خطراً على نفسك مع غيرك.
