@jonjon.jpeg: Highways didn’t appear in a vacuum. They displaced people, erased viable working neighborhoods, and built walls that cut communities off from downtown jobs, services, and opportunity. #chattanooga #urbanism #urbanrenewal #strongtowns #carculture
Infrastructure is inherently political. And, unfortunately, most of those politics are racially and economically classist and racist.

How I hate this. Our world has been made so much worse in so many ways by the proliferation of the personal motor vehicle.

I keep seeing a trend for myself where every time I like a video like this, an ad pops up after, but if I scroll back to watch this a second time, my like is gone. 🤔 thanks for the history and education once again friend

Thanks for sharing Jon. I think a lot of times with growth a lot of people forget the communities that fall by the wayside.

I experienced that when I visited there one time for a concert. The hotel I stayed at was close to the venue but a very inconvenient walk due to the highway

It is so important for us to talk about the decisions that change our communities. I would love to hear your take on I-40 in Memphis where the community successfully stoped it from coming through the city during this time.

I know Indianapolis is in discussions about how 65 and 70 through downtown could be reconfigured or lowered to reconnect neighborhoods. There’s a CBS Sunday Morning segment “Indianapolis’ Idle an oasis on the interstate” about a man who built a park on the South Split that separated his parents’ childhood neighborhoods- Irish and Italian. Urban Renewal negatively impacted my town, Bloomington, Indiana, at the same time the state’s largest reservoir displaced multiple communities of poor farmers nearby. Some evicted for no reason as their abandoned hometown of Elkinsville is still above water.

yes a lot of these highways were built along the lines we see in redlining (a system used to continue segregation through controlling where black people could buy homes) so they basically became physical borders of segregation.

Honestly believe Urban Renewal was one of the single biggest mistakes the nation has made in the last 70 years. Here’s a famous before and after of Kansas City.

All of it is sad and embarrassing, but something that gets overlooked is the negativity that now surrounds the idea of urban renewal in a modern sense. You talk about lot about infill density and street-level retail, and how most of that is banned. Yet large scale rezoning is shunned as an acceptable option for redevelopment.
