American winters are affected by the polar jet stream which is partly from the arctic. UK weather is affected by the warmer Atlantic and Gulf Stream air.

The UK is farther North than NYC, but the Jetstream keeps it mostly temperate, Vancouver & Seattle also are warmer because of the Jetstream. NYC has a different weather system.
