If one colonel had signed a routine flight clearance on the night of December 3rd, 2024, South Korea's attempted coup might have worked. If you missed it, then-President Yoon Suk Yeol went on television, declared emergency martial law, and sent nearly 700 soldiers to seize the National Assembly. Nothing like it had happened since 1980. At 10:48 that night, a special forces aviation battalion asked Capital Defense Command for clearance to fly its helicopters into Seoul's restricted airspace. Colonel Kim Mun-sang, the operations chief, asked what the flight was for.

He refused, and refused again six minutes later. When he heard Yoon's martial law declaration on television, his first thought was, "Is this fake news? Is this edited?" Twelve Black Hawks lifted from Icheon without clearance anyway and held ten minutes at the edge of Seoul's restricted airspace. The pilot in command said, "I learned the target was the National Assembly after the engines were already running." Kim Mun-sang's refusal held until the martial law commander authorized entry. Because Kim Mun-sang wouldn't approve a flight nobody would explain, the operation lost 55 minutes while lawmakers raced to the building. The rest of the night went the same way. A follow-on force of 51 soldiers reached Seogang Bridge at 1:04 and turned around. The commander inside asked whether he could use tasers and blank rounds, and was told no. The plan depended on keeping fewer than 150 lawmakers out of the chamber. His soldiers had no way to stop them, and 190 made it in and voted unanimously to end martial law. Six days later Kim Hyun-tae, who had taken 197 men into that building, stood before cameras and wept: "My men are all victims. I am an incompetent and irresponsible commander. I drove my men into a death trap." The brigadier who commanded the airborne unit wept in a parliamentary hearing too: "It feels as though we were used as a tool of politics." On August 27th, 2026, Kim Hyun-tae was sentenced to 12 years and taken into custody. Yoon was sentenced to life.
