If you want them to take off their shoes let them know ahead of time. They may not take their shoes off in your house because it may be considered rude if they were to get “too comfortable” at your house by taking off the shoes

While living in Turkey, it was customary to take your shoes off at the front door and your host or hostesses always had a pair of slip on sandals for you to put on so you weren’t completely without something on your feet

OMG, I couldn’t believe it. I’m 50 years old now. Immigrated to the US four years ago, I cannot believe nobody takes their shoes off!!!! We live in Arizona now and there isn’t even a front door closet !!! Growing up in Vancouver Canada you always had a spot when you enter someone’s house to take your shoes and coat off guests would come in … hang up their jackets… and remove their shoes. I remember my parents always bring slippers to a party so when they took their shoes off, their feet would be warm.

Here in Canada, it’s automatic that we take off our shoes. It’s so strange the Americans don’t take off their shoes automatically. NO YOU DON’T have to get used to!!! … your house, your rules!!! Tell everyone as thy come into your house to take their shoes off

Minnesotan and ALWAYS take shoes off. But I think it depends on the region. Since we get lots of snow and melting snow (mud) I think that’s why.

My Canadian friend had to be reminded to take her shoes off everyone time she came over. I think this is most likely a personal preference rather than a regional one. I only mentioned her nationality to show the opposite can be true also.
