as a tour guide here in Washington DC, when I talk about the War of 1812 I am often thinking about the weather and how it turned drastically severe the day of the British (with Canadian support) on that day. The Brits occupied the city on August 24th through 25th, 1814. A powerful thunderstorm, possibly spanning one or more tornadoes struck in on August 25th, battering the occupiers with torrential rain, fierce winds and flying debris. While almost all the federal buildings would be burned, the storm extinguished many of the fires that to the buildings. Because of the bad weather, they were only in the city for about 26 hours. Some guys talk about the "Storm that saved Washington." British Admiral George Cockburn spoke with a local woman during the chaos - he asked about the freakish weather, to which she replied, "no sir, this is a special interposition of Providence to drive our enemies from the city." in a way, perhaps she was right because the US would go on to inspire other countries around the world to rid themselves of their own oppressors successfully

The War of 1812 was one of those wars that simply should not have happened. The Brits we're using aggressive maritime practice which was the catalyst for the US getting involved. Madison likely would not have declared war. The US did send soldiers to the provisional capital of Canada, York. Even Madison himself thought as the war went on and challenges mounted, he recognized the difficulties faced by the US military battling UK soldiers (plus the citizens lack of popular support for the war). He never specifically outlined regret like a modern leader would; his but some historians say he was. The Brits also had their hands full with Napoleon, but were impressed with American sailors with their contentious. But I guess without the war we likely would not have had people like Commodore Decatur and Andrew Jackson become part of the national question
