I think is part of why practicing textile and fiber arts today feels so centering for many people. It’s baked into the human condition in a way that the motions feel nostalgic for our bodies.

To me more interesting than textiles leading up to the modern era, is textiles in and coming out of the medieval era. The ‘middle class’ was born out of literal cottage industry, starting way before the ‘industrial revolution’ as we describe it.

I'm following @eve.schaub.im.grow as she grows a dress, and the amount of time and effort it takes to get the linen for one dress from seed is eye-opening

As someone who has made cloth (spinning, weaving, knitting, sewing) I absolutely see the human in every piece of clothing I buy.

To the final point here: according to the BLS, Americans spent about 6% of their annual income on clothing in the mid 80 and only 2.6% today. At the turn of the 20th century, the average American household spent 14% of its annual income on clothing.
