After more than a month in ICE detention, this man was finally released. Volunteers from different states came together to drive him safely from Michigan all the way home to Minnesota. He and his wife were simply traveling to New York when they were pulled over and detained by ICE. His wife has since been deported, and he is now left separated from her and burdened with more than $20,000 in debt. What should have been an ordinary trip changed their lives forever. Please be careful when traveling, especially through unfamiliar places. Know your surroundings, research your route, share your location with someone you trust, and have an emergency plan. This is not about living in fear, it is about staying informed and protecting one another. “Racial profiling turns an ordinary road into a place of fear, where the color of someone’s skin can determine whether they arrive safely or lose everything.” We must continue speaking out against the profiling and unjust treatment that tear families apart.
