To the people saying Byler makes no sense: you clearly weren't the intended audience, and that’s okay. Every main couple in this show is a rebellion against the 1980s norms the Duffers have been criticizing since Season 1. Nancy and Jonathan broke class barriers. Jopper are divorced single parents. Lumax is an interracial couple. Dustin and Suzie are different religions. The only relationships that represent the 'Perfect 1950s Nuclear Norm' are Ted/Karen, Nancy/Steve, and Mike/El. The Duffers showed us how depressed Karen is to prove that the 'suburban dream' is a lie. They broke Nancy out of it. Why would they keep Mike stuck in it? If Mike stays with El, he remains a stagnant, flat character whose only trait is 'Boyfriend.' He literally becomes his dad, Ted. You think the Duffers—who are obsessed with leaving a legacy—are going to end their masterpiece with the most predictable, 'safe' trope in history? Will Byers being the 'Gay Best Friend' who suffers in silence while being the ONLY character to end up alone is the biggest 80s stereotype there is. The Duffers have broken every single other 80s stereotype. You really think they’re going to draw the line at the biggest taboo of that decade? They aren't going to spend 10 years building a story just to stop at the finish line because they’re 'scared' of gay love. Will is getting his win, Mike is getting his arc, and the 'Nuclear Norm' is going into the trash where it belongs."
