Why are you assuming we want humanity to survive

I like the Buddhist answer to this. Is it true, is it helpful, is it kind/compassionate? Then speak. Telling people true things that don't help them and are unkind is as bad as lying

Truth is not immoral. Dumping it onto people who are ill prepared can be.

I am an atheist and a nihilist as well as a nurse. When one of my patients is on their deathbed and they talk about going to heaven or seeing loved ones in the afterlife I agree with them an offer words of hope. I am fine with doing this because this is their belief and something that is necessary for them. It will do me or them no harm to agree. And believe me, I am definitely an atheist.

I don't think nihilism equates to meaninglessness. Nihilism refuses to continue to give meaning to things that are meaningless and arbitrary. One could say that nihilism seeks to find genuine meaning by eliminating fake meaning.

until you can conclusively prove that there is no God and no existence after death, it's kind of a moot point.

We haven’t explored enough of being human. Religion is a social construct.

why take someone's coping mechanism away from them as long as they don't use it for oppression/ discrimination/ harm, you know?

Im a non-religious yet spiritual person. Im also a technologist and am fascinated by the overlap between quantum physics and spirituality. I suspect the answer, or at least a glimpse of direction lies somewhere in the overlap between those domains.

I live my life exactly like that, I think human beings have the hability to create their own purpose; morality, ethics and meaning comes from within us. There is no magic, god or anything else. We are just here, and it doesn’t have to have any meaning to enjoy it. But I used to think everyone else can se this if they study and comprehend enough

I mean, I really don't care what other people believe in. How they bring meaning to their lives is not for me to try to influence. The only real issue I have with religion is when people's religious beliefs affect other people's freedoms, how the government operates etc.

Yes its a good question. But look beyond the US, at countries like the Netherlands or Czech Republic. Religion rates low and dropping sharply, yet very well functioning societies.

I’m a nihilist, but I don’t mind living without meaning because we are already here. My only difficulty is that everyone else invents stories for themselves like religion, the universe, spirituality, power games, politics, countries, social status. If we all understood that there is no inherent meaning, but that our bodies still feel and function and we all just want to feel loved and protected, there would be no need for ego, and we would communicate with honesty and openness, live together, and survive together. The problem is that many people without some invented higher force would not want to live, because it would wound their ego at a level that feels impossible to repair.

Secularism or atheism is not nihilism. That is an idea pushed by the religious.

Not gonna get into it too deep but secularism doesn't equate with nihilism. That being said, it absolutely is possible through proper education. Look at nordic countries.

why would a supposedly purposeless universe consistently produce humans who psychologically and morally collapse without purpose? If meaning is an illusion, why are we biologically and consciously structured to need it?

Am I understanding that you're saying that we can't build thriving secular societies in large groups? Because the HDI says the opposite.

humans don’t give humans enough credit. we’ve managed to survive and thrive this long because we’re capable of learning and adapting. we will eventually recognize the inherent value in each other (rather than the divine) but right now we’re in the learning curve of our species history

If we weren’t raised and put into religion we wouldn’t go on thinking we need a purpose. That’s what I would assume, I was born into religion and it hurt waking up. But if I didn’t start out as religious, I don’t think it would be as bad but I really don’t know for certain.

I think the answer to your question is meaningless, because you cannot confront people with nihilism. It is a point that they have to be smart enough to reach on their own...

Optimistic Nihilism is unbelievably freeing. Your life is 2 dates and dash in between. Accept it’s a meaningless journey. Enjoy the dash. When/if possible help others enjoy their journey/dash and leave this place a little better then you found it.

i think you present a false dichotomy. it's not about making the believers come to truth (secularism). it's about casting doubt on frameworks of oppression, genocide, religious trauma, etc. Let them have belief, but only channeled to the benefit of humanity.
