I just wanna put this out there… Not all committed relationships need to end in marriage. Couples can have a committed long-term, lasting relationship without the actual marriage. It’s not for everybody, so I don’t think he should be judged for not proposing. Maybe they already agreed not to get married.

everyone going off about them not being engaged after 8 years, my best friend and her partner have been together 21 years engaged for 10 with no plans of actually getting married, you don't need a name change and a piece of paper to prove you love each other!!! regarding the actual issue, I'd speak to the gf first, tell her about the messages you've seen tell how you feel and that you have her back, I don't think she'd appreciate you speaking to your mother without speaking to her first, and also from how the mother is described I imagine she would double down on the hateful messages.

Communicate with your partner! Mom sounds like a “boy mom” and you need to be clear that you are not on board! Decide with your partner ahead of time what steps you will both take TOGETHER to handle this situation. Be a united front.
