@blakebakerrealestate: April 16, 1947. Texas City, Texas. One ship. One explosion. Still the deadliest industrial accident in U.S. history. • A French ship carrying 2,300 tons of ammonium nitrate caught fire and detonated • The blast was equal to a small nuclear weapon • Nearly 600 people killed, thousands injured • Over 1,000 buildings destroyed in seconds • Cars, steel beams, and bodies were thrown miles away • The shockwave shattered windows as far away as Galveston The craziest part? It was visible on seismographs hundreds of miles away. It happened right here on the Texas coast — and it reshaped industrial safety laws forever. Texas City literally rebuilt from the ground up. History matters. Location matters. And sometimes the land remembers more than we think.

My family survived the Texas City disaster. They take a group photo of the survivors every year on the anniversary. This is the photo from 2025.

Not mentioned here is the second explosion. the initial explosion from the Grandcamp set fire to another ship, the SS Highflyer. The next day, the Highflyer also exploded with a similar cargo load, and was around as powerful as the first explosion. Fortunately, evacuations were already in place and the Highflyer explosion only resulted in two deaths. One of its propellers was thrown nearly a mile away and was recovered and put up as a monument right up the road from the Grandcamp's anchor. You can see it today as you drive onto the Texas City Dike.

My great-grandmother lived in La Marque when it happened. She had clothes drying in the backyard on the clothes line and she said when she went to take them down she found skin on them.

For any readers out there, this is a great book that tells the fascinating story. Texas City happened nearly 75 years prior to Beirut.
