@officialkaizenlab: A C-17 Globemaster III is engineered for short, rough-field operations, but an aircraft carrier presents constraints far beyond its design envelope. What would be required to make it possible: The deck length is the primary limiter. A C-17 typically needs ~3,000–4,000 ft for safe takeoff, even when lightly loaded. U.S. carriers offer ~1,100 ft of usable deck. A ski-jump ramp cannot compensate for the missing runway length because the aircraft still must accelerate to full rotation speed before liftoff. Structural loading is another blocker. The C-17 has a maximum takeoff weight of ~585,000 lb. Carrier decks are reinforced for fighter-class point loads, not sustained wide-body rolling loads from 4-wheel bogie landing gear. Deck damage and structural failure would be likely. Launch assistance would need to change entirely. Steam or EMALS catapults are designed for aircraft under ~80,000 lb. Scaling a catapult to launch a C-17 would require: • Dramatically higher energy output • Reinforced launch tracks • A redesigned nose-gear launch interface • Airframe structural modifications to absorb launch loads Wind-over-deck and thrust are insufficient. Even at full thrust from four turbofans, a C-17 cannot reach safe rotation speed in carrier deck distance without external acceleration. Unlike STOVL aircraft, it has no thrust-vectoring capability. Arresting and recovery would also be impossible. The C-17 is not designed for arrested landings. Hook loads, sink rates, and deceleration forces would exceed airframe limits. Bottom line: A C-17 cannot take off from an aircraft carrier with a ramp alone. Making it possible would require a fundamentally different carrier design, a heavy-lift catapult system, reinforced decks, and major airframe redesign. 🚀 Link in bio for merch & accessories 📸: #military #engineering #airforce #militarytech #aerospace
