just a clarification for whoever’s intrested! 99% of italians actually just call the place where you get a coffee a “bar”, not a caffè. “vado a prendere un caffè al bar” = “i’m going to get a coffee at the café”. cool vid tho!!

maybe the word changed from wine to coffee due to religious beliefs that alcohol should be prohibited

Maybe because a bar was called "قهوة" and alcohol is forbidden in Islam. so, to keep going to the bar with your friends, you'd need a different beverage, and that beverage was coffee.

The amount of history in just one word used to describe a drink that's been around for so long is just so freaking interesting, it's all so cool how almost every word can be traced back quite a ways back

Also, fun fact: The German word for Coffee is Kaffee, though café (the place where you get coffee) is still Café. Both pronounced the same. I guess German grabbed the K from the Dutch (or adapted it to our own spelling preferences, maybe?), but loaned the name for the type of establishment from somewhere else? I'm not gonna look into it (got enough other things to do, make, and look into), but it's kinda neat to think about

We have a unique word in Armenian. Coffee is called սուրճ [surt͡ʃʼ]. And there are 3 versions about the origin of this word. 1) the sound of “slurp” while drinking coffee. 2) սև(sev)+ջուր(d͡ʒur)=black+water. 3) Arabic سُلْج (sulj) meaning “swallowed with food” (less widely accepted). And I think that’s uniquely beautiful

No that’s not how it shifted in meaning but قهوة in Arabic refers to anything you drink slowly (so mainly wine) which is why some scholars in islam said drinking coffee is a sin because you drink it slowly and it affects your mood kinda like alcohol 🙏

I always just assumed we took "cafetería" (coffee shop) and changed it to cafeteria and shortened it to café.

The Arabic word (قهوة) was a descriptor for “satiating” but was also used in 5th century Arab poetry to mean “something intoxicating.” Early examples of coffee’s stimulating effect were sometimes compared to drunken nonsense, so it could have come from a combination of that generalisation + combining drunkenness with stimulation as a “drugged effect.” That, or the name Kaffa overtook the original meaning and rewrote it. Both are viable. Also, hope you feel better soon!! 🩷
