@ultrabasicmetamafic: Have you ever wondered what a rock looks like under a microscope? Welcome back to Geology with Emmalee. Today we are in the lab and looking at rocks under a microscope! In order to see these rocks and allow light to pass through (some) minerals, we cut the rocks down super thin to about 30 microns. That’s about as thick as one hair on your head! These slices of rock are then glued onto glass and we call them “thin sections”. Thin sections can be used in petrographic microscopes as well as in electron microprobes to better identify minerals within a rock. Different minerals have different optical properties that we identify them by. Over the next week we will be diving into optical mineralogy to better understand the world around us!
