evil boys from high school become cops…. evil girls from high school become nurses. it’s about being able to continue exerting power over people while appearing like a good person

All high school mean girls are nurses, but not every nurse is a mean girl. I learned that in nursing school😂

While there is no formal psychological data proving a "pipeline," the idea is a viral social media trope rooted in a few real-world factors. Workplace Culture: Nursing has a documented history of lateral violence, often summarized by the phrase "nurses eat their young." Studies show up to 40% of nurses experience workplace bullying, which mirrors the cliquey social dynamics of high school. Job Appeal: Nursing offers a clear hierarchy, job security, and authority over others (patients), which can appeal to personalities that crave control. Demographics: Because nursing remains a female-dominated field, it is frequently the target of "mean girl" stereotypes, whereas similar behaviors in male-dominated fields (like finance or law) are often labeled "aggressive" or "ambitious" rather than "bullying." Selection Bias: People tend to remember and post about the "bully" who became a nurse more than the "quiet kid" who did, fueling the confirmation bias that keeps the trope alive on TikTok and Reddit.

Anthropologist here! These traits are most commonly associated (in this age) with trend following and popularity. There are two ways we can look at this... 1) the common phenomenon of popularity causing said person to mistreat others (think high school bully mean girl) now feeling guilt and looking to "fix" her actions. 2) Popularity is a drug. The feeling of importance can be found through many career paths, but nursing is considered to be highly important. As their popularity probably distracted them from their early years of academic performance, the doctor route is unlikely. The high school bully usually doesn't remain "popular/important" after high school - and seeks a career where they are constantly put on a pedestal (from the OUTSIDE - as nursing is actually a brutal job field). They are praised from family and friends, and they then remain center of attention. *this is theoretical, of course

I promise that nurses aren’t mean girls when they’re the only thing standing between a patient and death. Riding on top of a gurney doing compressions until their arms go lip and then crying on the way home if the patient doesn’t make it. Promise you they’re not mean girls then

It’s performing like a good person. They wanted to come off as a caring interesting person instead of developing a personality they picked up all of these characteristics and when you’re asked what career they want go… I guess I’ll be a nurse. Yeah that sounds like a good person thing to do.

lowkey i kinda just think a lot of women become nurses 😭 its a well paying stable job, you can easily travel and work as a nurse, theres a huge variety of nursing roles, lots of managerial roles are nursing positions 🤷‍♀️like its a GOOD qualification to have 😅 but it is also an acceptable career path for women in conservative spaces, so maybe thats way so many mean girls gravitate towards the field.

nursing is a very intense field. unfortunately a lot of the really kind hearted and sweet nurses get burnt out very quickly. while the more calloused nurses are able to easily maneuver threw the stress because they dont get as emotionally invested if at all. some sweet nurses are able to compartmentalize and remain incredibly kind, but those are a rarity

possible cause: incredibly low self-esteem resulting in a deep need for validation, sometimes* comes with the communal or the vulnerable subtype of narcissistic personality disorder (that comes with other symptoms).
