The invasion was carried out across five beaches: Utah Beach, Omaha Beach, Gold Beach, Juno Beach, and Sword Beach. Allied paratroopers were also dropped behind enemy lines to secure key roads, bridges, and strategic positions. The fighting was especially intense at Omaha Beach, where American forces faced strong German defenses and suffered heavy casualties. Despite fierce resistance, the Allies successfully established a foothold in Normandy by the end of the day. D-Day was a major turning point in the war. The successful invasion allowed Allied forces to advance through France, leading to the liberation of Paris in August 1944 and contributing to the eventual defeat of Germany in May 1945.
