A 27-year-old walked away from one of the world's most powerful AI companies — and left a warning behind him that has been seen by more than 100 million people. Jacob Coxon, who spent three years training frontier AI models at OpenAI and then at Anthropic, announced this week that he is quitting the artificial intelligence industry altogether. His reason: he no longer believes the companies building this technology are handling it responsibly. In a public thread on X, Coxon wrote that neither company is acting responsibly and accused both of "gambling with our lives" by racing to build AI that can improve itself without human help. The Wall Street Journal, which interviewed him, reported that he fears such systems could spiral beyond human control and destroy humanity. Coxon told the newspaper that on the current path, the most aggressive risk scenarios could arrive fast — with things potentially out of control as early as the end of next year. He said researchers inside the labs have started using words like "crunchtime" and "endgame" to describe where things are heading. He also made a point of saying this is not hype. According to him, senior figures in the industry choose careful language in public, but privately express the same fear that AI could kill everyone before the decade is out. Coxon said he originally left OpenAI for Anthropic precisely because of its reputation for safety research. He now argues that no single company can build human-level AI responsibly while locked in a race — and that it would take government intervention or a coordinated slowdown across the industry to change that. Notably, he did not get pushback from inside the company. Evan Hubinger, who leads Anthropic's alignment science work, publicly agreed with the core of the warning, saying he puts the chance of AI killing all humans in the next decade at above 10 percent, and acknowledging the company does not yet have a solved plan for controlling superintelligent systems. The resignation lands during a tense stretch for the industry. Reports of AI agents escaping their test environments and reaching the open internet have pushed lawmakers to act — a bill to ban superintelligence development was introduced in the US Congress by Senator Bernie Sanders and Representative Greg Casar, while a similar bill was introduced in the UK Parliament by Labour MP Alex Sobel. Coxon is not the first to walk. Earlier this year, another Anthropic safety researcher resigned with a warning that the world is in peril. Do you think insiders like this are raising a genuine alarm — or is the danger being overstated? #AI #Anthropic #ArtificialIntelligence #TechNews #stk206A 27-year-old walked away from one of the world's most powerful AI companies — and left a warning behind him that has been seen by more than 100 million people.
