You'd think a better pilot transfer system would have been developed over the past 200 or so years. In the Navy at least we had a chair & line.

Crew don't typically board a shop that's underway; though i have done it. Even a ship at anchorage can get hairy, though. First rule of thumb: always wait for launch boat to be at the top of the swell. Once you grab hold of the Jacob's ladder (rope ladder) you scramble up as fast as is safe. Otherwise, if you leave the launch/pilot boat on the down swell, it could crush you against the ship's hull as waves lift it up. Add sleet on a Winter day and the ladder might be icy. On my very first ship I'd gone ashore to visit family. When I got back to the dock, my ship was gone! It'd been moved from a dock in bayonet, NJ to Manhattan Harbor. I got a ride to the launch service out to the ship. With a few drinks in me, I had to climb a 40 foot, icy, Jacob's Ladder. B y the time I reached the top, where I had to climb over the ship's railing, my legs were like jello, hands were frozen, and heart was about ready to pound outta my chest 😆. But it being in the early days of women in the Merchant Marine I put on a brave face for the watch waiting for me on deck and said; "That wasn't so bad!". Then I went to my stateroom and shook for an hour 😆.
