@markhasara: In your window seat behind the wing and this is what you see during engine start… smoke and a sudden burst of flames coming out of the back of the engine. What is your first impulse? Am I staying on or are we all getting off the airplane. I always briefed our Crew Chiefs (maintainers of the jet) what we would do if they called flames or a HOT START as we called it. Normally it blows itself out as the engine winds up the speed of the engine flow increases. The Crew Chief would just say “Hit start on engine X.” A Fire Bottlexwas always posted near the engine we were cranking up. If the flames and fire got out of hand we performed engine fire procedures and put the fire out.
