The so-called “thin blue line” is not trained to defend the Constitution, the law, or even the basic rights of the people they serve. Instead, their training emphasizes one thing above all else: compliance. Too often, citizens are treated as suspects first and human beings second. That is why we must be cautious in every encounter. Blind cooperation only reinforces a system that too frequently strays from its own promises. Our civic responsibility is to hold officers accountable to the oaths they swore—through litigation when necessary—because without accountability, misconduct will continue unchecked. Real change will only come when those entrusted with authority are compelled to answer for their actions. Until then, the public’s trust in law enforcement will remain fractured.
