@dan_nanni: Linux processes are always moving through a small set of core states: Runnable (R) when the scheduler can run them, Interruptible Sleep (S) when they wait on I/O or signals, Uninterruptible Sleep (D) when they are stuck in kernel I/O, Stopped (T) when signals pause execution, and Zombie (Z) after exit while the parent collects status. Every ps letter you see maps directly to one of these transitions driven by syscalls, signals, and I/O events. Once you understand this loop, tools like ps, top, strace, and scheduler behavior suddenly make sense.
