This. I didn’t wanna send my 🍇ist into the prison industrial complex - legalized slavery - where he would probably get worse. I wanted him to confront his actions and change. That, to ME, would be real justice.

Look at the specific wording that you used, “once I was able to breathe”, which means in order to do this work, you had to be in an environment that you felt you were safe

You’re 100% correct. But I want to note that the prison system was designed to keep people oppressed. It’s a for-profit system. Incarcerated individuals are not supposed to learn anything or grow from their experience, the system is designed to break people so they don’t ever leave the system.

not everyone is capable of taking accountability and feeling empathy.

We do not rehabilitate with punishment. There's no lesson to be learned, just pain.

I work in traffic safety and I see this all the time in the comments people make about wanting an enforcement hammer to come down law breakers because of the fear/pain they are in. I tried to gently remind them that what we really want is compliance with speed limits and other traffic laws. You can control many people through fear — of violence, imprisonment, fines, etc. – but you can’t change their hearts that way, which I think is the real goal. Unfortunately, individually and societally, we often lack the patience and compassion to orient to that goal. Instead, we let our own fear and pain get in the way and reach for the hammer, which in many instances, only perpetuates the cycle.

This is so powerful. We are so quick to punish in this country and it’s disservice to us all.

accountability makes you see your own capability and power - punishment strips it from you without you understanding

for some reason we believe that to make someone suffer for their actions is somehow justice. why?

It’s so important for us all to understand what accountability looks like versus punishment — thank you for showing up for yourself and others and being so vulnerable on this Wild West of voldemorts internet.

thank you for sharing, its such a truth. capitalism uses punishment, from the system to the family, to destabilize communities and reenforce classism. spiritual wounds are physical wounds, you just cant see them on the surface because they are an injury to your nervous and lymphatic systems. our whole system is fueled by our collective pain.

Out of genuine curiosity, do you think you would’ve been in a place to be empathetic towards those people had you not had the prior three years of miserable survival mode to get you to that point? If not, how long do you think you would’ve needed without the punishment aspect to be able to arrive at the same empathy?

this is fire 🔥 the carceral system truly is an isolationist tool that blocks off the path towards community healing... the people/institutions in power don't want us to unify because they know we have more in common than we do with them !

Thank you for sharing! It's such an important message for everyone to hear. Do you speak to inmates now about this? If not, you should! Love and light sir.
