@itsaihistory: 🛡️ 866–867 AD | Viking Shieldmaiden Speaking Old Norse (Jórvík, York) What you’re seeing: Warriors forming a shield wall (skjaldborg) as a Scandinavian force captures York, the city the Norse called Jórvík. This moment fits the late 860s, when fighting in Northumbria helped shift control of the region away from its Anglo-Saxon kings. Old Norse (reconstructed commands):
“Gjǫr skjaldborg!” (Make a shield wall!)
“Fram!” (Forward!)
“Hoggvið þá!” (Strike them!) Modern Icelandic echo: Modern Icelandic is the closest living relative of Old Norse, so some words and spellings can feel familiar even when the sounds are not identical. Discrepancy note: The pronunciation here is a modernized approximation for clarity. Viking Age pronunciation is reconstructed and cannot be recovered with perfect certainty. Kit also varied widely, so a real shield wall would often look less uniform than most reconstructions. What was the Great Heathen Army? A large, organized Scandinavian coalition that arrived in England in 865 AD, moved kingdom to kingdom, and aimed to conquer and hold territory rather than just raid. After landing, the force secured horses and used fast inland mobility, then set up seasonal bases and winter camps to keep campaigning year after year. How did it reach Jórvík and why? The army came by ship, then pushed north into Northumbria, where taking York offered a major strategic prize. York sat on key routes and could be used to control movement, supply, and power in the region. The capture of York in 866, followed by major fighting in 867, is one of the signature early episodes of the invasion. 🎥 All visuals are original AI-assisted recreations produced by @itsaihistory for educational and documentary purposes. #itsaihistory #History #vikings #LanguageLearning #language

"fram" is still the contemporary Swedish word for "forward", however it's "framåt" in order to signal movement. 🇸🇪

There seem to be some problems here. ö is used in place of ǫ in some texts, because Modern Icelandic doesn't use ǫ, so using them both seems weird. Also I think gera was more common historically than gjöra. I am not sure gjöra was used with skaldborg, though I'd have to check. Also, why switch from imperative singular to imperative plural?

Norse women had high stat in viking age, they run the farm and could divorce a man. If they fought it was most likely as skimrisher, archers😊
