Pan law does NOT equal “sound quality” - It just changes gain staging philosophy. You can mix a chart ready record at -3 dB in Pro Tools or -4.5 dB on an SSL and they’ll null once compensated. People who say “this pan law sounds warmer/wider” are hearing loudness differences, not magic.

Ummmmmmm no ….. you have to compensate while mixing and there is a reason why -3db is at default 😅😅 ……. -3db is default cuz is where you perceive left and right channels almost the same to the center in terms of volumen. The biggest reason why to put it to -4.5 db is when you are connected to a real ssl console and u are sending outputs to the console . Otherwise many daws have -3 db as default

am I missing something because in my head this doesn't change your mix taste. If I move something from left to center or vice versa, I adjust the volume to taste. Pan depth will just make my starting point different correct?

I thought it was the interface itself. Also some plugins will totally change your analog signal. I couldn’t believe what proQ did to my signal.

Pan laws only matter when you automate panning. you nix into whatever pan law your DAW has and you will compensate for the level according to how loud you want something in the mix. things only start to sound different when you automate pan or change pan law to older sessions with different pan laws. it won't magically make your mixes sound more analog or anything like that.
