@oxxollinana: Not my typical content but really wish someone can help me out here… I’ve moved to a new building back in August and I’ve started hearing “persistent and disruptive crackling” sounds throughout my apartment whenever there is significant wind. The building has stated that this originates from the water damper system and is a normal feature of a tall building’s design. However, as someone who has previously lived in even taller high-rise buildings that also utilize tuned water mass dampers, I can confidently say that this level of noise is not normal — nor is it something a resident should be expected to tolerate in a residential living space. Does anyone else also has the same experience? I know other units in my building have similar issues but apparently according to the building team my unit is sounding the worst. Also want to hear any advice as to what I can do …. I just started this lease and have a whole year left. #nycrentals #nycapartment #legalhelp #helpme

Buildings are made to sway, but that sound means the steel supports are stressed and about to crumble. You need to call the fire department and county inspectors/structural engineers. It should never be that loud!

Wait. FOUR MONTHS of noises increasing and you haven’t escalated this beyond your building manager/maintenance!? Advocate for yourself. Call 311, the fire department, mayor, everyone.

That is definitely not normal. My husband is a contractor and that is 100% a structure issue. I suggest you break your lease for safety reasons and get out.

I saw a video a couple of years ago where the girl did not hesitate to call the fire department because the brick was no longer attached to the building. They all packed up that evening and moved to a safe location. She saved so many lives BY NOT HESITATING TO CALL THE FD!!!! You know about it and people are telling you what to do. Do it!!!! They're are other lives at risk other than yours. Stop fiddle fartin' around.

If that's normal for tall buildings, why would millionaires and people with tons of money want to live there with this loud creaking horrible sound

Your have a structural issue; tall buildings, the frame of the building will sway and flex a bit, and a curtain wall is designed to flex without making noise like this or opening up for air and water intrusion. It sounds like either that corner has bad structural design, or the interior wall was incorrectly attached to the superstructure and as it flexes, it’s making noises. Either way, this is incredibly expensive for the owner to fix. You’re talking $500k to several million. There is no way they will do anything about it unless they are compelled to. What that means for you is that you should document everything, speak to an attorney, and try to get them to pay you for your relocation somewhere else. Short term there should not be a safety issue. Long-term yes, there could be a safety issue with the building after incurring years of stress on structure. Definitely do not continue to stay there.
