to me, what’s exciting about the conversation pit is the pit part — the variation in vertical habitable space. vertical shift = visual lift, & vice versa. levels are fun cuz up or down it creates a stage effect. the thrill is a vestige of spectacle, which is another reason it supplants TV so easily. we can watch each other instead. it also brings a sense of play, raising living room to romper room. why just live when you can romp? it’s hard to dig a playground pit inside tho, so I’m forever wishing RISERS & raised platforms could be a normal home decor thing. if you can’t dig down, let the floor rise up. great underfoot storage for studio spaces, too.
