My favorite fact about the Wright Brothers is that Orville met Chuck Yeager. The person who completed the first flight met the person who broke the sound barrier.

I mean, technically, Orville was the ONLY pilot in the world in 1903, so he was the best AND the worst pilot. 🤪 For a little more context, Daimler-Benz built the first modern car in 1886 - and the first motorcycle in 1885. Ford started building cars in 1903, and Harley Davidson started building motorcycles in 1904. In the span of about 20 years, we went from riding horses to driving cars and flying heavier than air vehicles! And 65 years later, we were walking on the moon!

I read that other people have tried to fly reproduction Wright Flyers and determined that, because it was so unbelievably hard to fly, Orville and Wilbur Wright were actually truly gifted pilots, even though their performance wasn't good

So what you're saying is an "unrestricted climb" should be called a "Wilbur maneuver"?

They also had major support from their sister! I believe it was Orville who said that she deserves partial credit

an Airbus A-380 has a 261.8 ft wingspan, so yeah they'd be mind blown at today's tech

In 1903 they were the only pilots of all time, so they were also technically the best 😂

in a way it's crazy how only 10 years later we went from the first flight to airplanes fighting in WW1 then 50 years later we put a man on the moon.

my favorite thing about this is the fact that two states are constantly arguing over who gets to claim first flight.

Knowing how to build a thing does not equal knowing how to operate it an important lesson from the wright brothers

The hard part isn’t being bad at something, it’s finding something no one has done TO be bad at.

I read a biography about them when I was 11, and became absolutely infatuated with them. I think the most impressive part about their whole process was the expectation of and preparation for failure. Their first flights were intentionally limited in hight and duration, and they didn't just take the flier up because it could, they waited until they had an iteration that was stable and even then capped their altitude and flew in a straight line initially, then later made laps at low altitude.

All four of my grandparents were alive when that flight occurred. Two of them watched the moon landing.
