It means that when your in your hometown there is probably a unspoken expectation that is required from all the people you know that youve grown up with or lived around. When you leave that anxiety disappears because you are finally free to be yourself and that expectation to be someone you are not is no longer there because you arent being watched by those same people. People from small towns rarely ever leave their town. Everyone is always up in everyones buisness.

I’m a Missouri girl (KC area) now living in New Mexico (Alb./Santa Fe area) I feel so out of place in New Mexico, and it seems that people make sure I know I don’t belong there. I’m back home for a while and cannot be happier!!! It’s not perfect here either, but at least it’s better than getting treated horribly in New Mexico!!!!
