i abandoned a friend once, the horrible part is i didn't even realise that i did.. although we're still good besties and i apologised and tried to make it right after they confronted me i still don’t think it's enough :( the guilt still eats me everyday and still cry about it now and then, what do you guys think i should do to ACTUALLY make it up? she forgives me but i cant seem to forgive myself, will never stop thinking about how she felt then

Did they abandon you in the ocean or were you drowning and when they tried to save you destroyed the raft and dragged them down with you and held all of it against them because the saving wasn’t entirely on the terms you imagined in your own head, so they realized that if only one of you was going to make it out it might as well be them, because they’re the person who tried to save you and they were the one who could still swim to shore, but they could no longer do it with you on their back?
