@adivreactions: Replying to @kafenelil so much if the food we eat in America comes from West Africakke watermelon, pigeon peas, black eye peas, rice, hibiscus. At the same time so much of the food eaten in West Africa comes from the natives in America like tomatoes, peppers, chilli's, corn, casava. There has been exchange between the Americas and Africa for centuries #FoodTok #foodreview #foodhistory #AfricanFood #mexicanfood

A lot of enslaved Africans create dishes from what they had while also sticking to their African roots as well as incorporating teaching from Native Americans that’s the beauty of black American dishes it’s connected from the root which all ties back to Africa and it’s a creation of something beautiful

Tamales originated in Mesoamerica (ancient Mexico and Central America) as far back as 8000-5000 BC, created by indigenous civilizations like the Olmecs, Mayans, and Aztecs as a portable, sacred food for travel, battles, and rituals.

I remember when I first tried West African food I was so shocked (in a good way) that it was so similar to Jamaican food I grew up with.

Interestingly, the reason peas/beans and rice are a combined food staple all over the world is those 2 foods combined, with nearly any combination of any species of beans/peas and rice, offer all of the macronutrients needed for modern humans.

The reason I love Puerto Rican food is the delicious mixture of African, European, and Taino food. Hell it's all of the Caribbean Islands that made the best from the Colonization of the Spanish, English and French. The food is the best and only thing that happened from the travesty that was Colonization.

As an Nigerian living in the US, thank you for this cos I try to explain it when I try certain foods but everyone wants to come for me cos they think I'm trying to appropriate their food/culture but I get this nostalgic feeling evertime I try Mexican, Jamaican or any other cuisine here and I say oh that tastes like xyz from my country...

Ackee comes from ankye and most West Africans don't eat ackee to which we added saltfish to become our national dish. We call dokonnu that name but also tie-leaf or blue draws. Other Caribbean islands call it duckun, conkey, paime etc and each of us have our own version. In Ghana they call kola nut bissy as well and we call it that in Jamaica too. Shows our connections

By the time many people were taken as slaves from africa to the Americans they were already exposed to crops from the Americas. It was already staple for generations before they seen it when they were taken to the Americas. Dokono is fermented cornmeal and has a sour taste, it’s wrapped in leaves or corn husk. In the Caribbean it’s sweet. So Africans in the Americas adapted and used the same name for the similar dish they probably encountered.
