Unacceptable that the coop is not regularly cleaned. If you’re going to have animals you need to look after them.

Chris wear gloves. Chicken droppings contain Histoplasmosis and it can get in your lungs but also if you touch your eyes it can affect your eyes. My husband grew up on a farm and he nearly lost his eyesight and it will always be an issue for him. I realize histoplasmosis is in the dirt but just protect yourself

Next little project. Paint the wire on the coop black. It will make it look invisible and sweet Emily Ann can see her chickens better 🥰

PSA for all you in the comments, it’s normal and okay for it to be months before the chicken coop is cleaned out. It’s called a “deep litter method”. If done extremely well it could even last a year or so.

Helpful tips: Do Not and I mean DO NOT use play sand. It will cause respiratory issues and impact their crops. Use either fine river sand or premium chicken sand. They need something course to help break up their pellets so add oyster shells as an option if they aren’t free ranging. If you guys have a problem keeping your coop clean implement the deep litter method. This is crazy bad for a coop and they deserve a clean place. Use a pvc pipe or place the waterer in the corner and secure the electrical line. Last thing you want is to come back from touring to a burnt down coop. We try to keep all electrical lines out of the coop and use solar since it’s an option for us.

I hate to say this but play sand is not a good idea. It can lead to crop impaction and respiratory illness. You want construction sand. It’s bigger.

All that chicken manure can be added to the garden now so it can age and break down before spring planting.

Maybe put the water back in that corner where the extension cord is and run the extension cord and the power cord up so that they don’t peck at it.

Move the water basin over into the corner and put the cord behind it coming out of the chicken coop, instead of leaving it out where the chickens can get to it.
