@rochellekingandrews: Contact isn’t something you hold. It’s something you allow. Horses mirror a rider’s nervous system faster than they mirror the reins. Brace in the rider → brace in the horse. If there’s no room in you, there’s no room in the horse’s neck. Sometimes allowing the contact to soften is what lets everything loosen and make sense again. Do you recommend clipping a horse my trainer said not to but my horse gets so sweaty all the time and I feel bad I put mesh rug on and helps but don’t know what to do

Lovely video. Just wanted to ask I’m struggling with my contact with my young 6 yr old in canter. He is still developing the strength to sit. Do you have any tips that might help? Tks x

I love the way you explain stuff like this, so many trainers shy away from the emotional/psychological side of dressage which is something that I believe has blocked my progress in so may ways, it doesn’t matter if I ask OTTB biomechanically ‘correctly’ to go round, if I’m not fully in it and smiling/chatting to him throughout the ride he doesn’t really give me his best. They can tell the difference between a stressed burnt out uni student that’s still thinking about her exams and trying to just get the ride done and who I’m trying to bring more consistently to the arena, a rider with ‘all the time in the word’ to find a way for her horse to work happily

I love everything you say and to add a point for beginners or Intermediate riders, a still and giving hand comes from a good seat. Rochelle has an excellent seat, therefore her hands, arms and shoulders move independently from the rest of her body. Connection and thereby collection come from the seat first, then legs, then hands.

what would you do with your body if you caused your horse to fall in at the canter and youre already applying as much inside leg as you physically can? (I know I'm the problem because I make every horse I ride fall in on the right lol but I dont know why!!)

I allow and mine just wants to hang. I know he needs to be more engaged from behind but it’s a constant battle to keep him soft and from behind without hanging.

This is good for me to see. As I’m working on 3/4th level movements with my gelding, he’s begun to lean and bully on me in the contact. I’ve mirrored this with tension through basically my entire body, especially my seat. I’ve been trying lessons with different people and playing with bitless bridles, new bits, I’ve had my farrier watch my rides to see if I need shoes, played with saddles etc etc…problem just returns. I’ve landed on it just being a mental problem on my end. Yes, he is a bit of a polite bully on his own, but I think expectation and this being my first time teaching these movements to a horse are a bigger part of the picture. It’s much harder to remain in a positive state of mind when it’s your own horse…but this was a good reminder. I need to address my headspace and not trap myself or my horse. It’s always easier on the sales horses or other peoples, but it’s so much more “personal” on your own! I’ve been having my trainer and other riders ride him instead so he can have a break from me and just doing 5-10 mins on him after he’s in a happy, positive state. It’s been such an uncomfortable hump for me in my journey!
