I'm always fascinated by the way glasses somehow culturally Aren't a disability aid, and the shortsightedness which would render me completely incapable of doing my work (like, if glasses didn't exist my entire career would be gone and I have no idea how I would survive) isn't a disability. ...but also I love the way shortsightedness is literally ONLY a disability because of what the Cultural norms for ocular focal points are; I've found that most people with 20/20 have no idea what shortsightedness even is — they think that my eyes are just damaged/bad/inferior, but shortsightedness actually just means that the field at which my eyes are lensed to see clearly is way closer to me than what is Usual, so I actually Love it because if I take my glasses off then suddenly I have SUPER precise vision on things held 10cm from my face — as if I had a built-in high-power magnifying glass — and I can do incredibly fine needlework or drawing. The thing that makes it a disability is just the cultural expectation that I SHOULD be able to clearly see things like facial expressions at 6m, meanwhile people with 20/20 can't see what I can see at close range, but that lack of capacity ISN'T a disability just because there are no norms which rely on that ability.

I have cerebral palsy and it mostly affects my legs so I consider chopping them off regularly the pain is so bad it has made me physically sick multiple times in my 25 years with my legs and 20 years of walking on them. I still have them though cause I can’t afford to cut them off.

Thank you so much for this perspective. Is it okay to relate this with my experience of “compulsory cis-passing”? I started medically transitioning to relieve dysphoria not to approximate a cis man. And even though I have gained a lot of passing privilege as time has gone on people are definitely more intense with their opinions about my gender now that I have modified my body to be more male than when I was as a nonbinary femme. And it used to feel like I was cosplaying cisness all the time when I presented female and now I don’t even really think about my gender that much. I am definitely more comfortable in my body than ever before and it has so little to do with striving to make cis people comfortable.

It's really weird to me that people choose to make someone else's disability about themselves. They just want you to make them more comfortable and that's so bizarre. I hope you do whatever makes your life easier.

how have the medical team managing your physical disabilities been about your transness? i ask as a fellow trans guy with immune issues, i definitely had to cycle through a few specialists before finding one who wasn’t weird about it (and am privileged enough to live somewhere with multiple options and have insurance that let me play the field so to speak lol)

People are able to understand this concept in Animals. They se dogs with a wheelchair and I understand why the dog is happy to have them... but cannot understand why wheelchairs are great for people!

The cost barrier for something like prosthetics in tandem with the inability for disabled people to have more than $2000 in cash and assets lest they lose any disability benefits/income should make everyone furious

Me and my best friend have a running joke that if someone is being weird and asking her why I’m in a wheelchair instead of me, she just says I got hit by a train lol. It usually deters people from further questions, although I’ll say the real reason if asked myself

Oh man- this links in directly to the case in the UK where an amputee has been taken off PIP and been told to repay because they play cricket. And apparently walking with a prosthetic is not classified as walking with a walking aid….

I feel with a lot of things people will go "You can be X as long as you're not that kind of X", with "that kind" usually referring to someone comfortable with how they are. You can be disabled as long as you don't look or act disabled. God forbid anything challenges their ideas of normal.
