@routes__app: She's not standing on a pedestal, she's landing on a warship ⚓️ This is Nike, the Greek goddess of victory, carved around 200 BC to celebrate a massive naval battle. The base she's standing on is the prow of a battleship. Her wings spread, robes whipping in the wind, descending to crown the victors She was originally placed on a cliff overlooking the sea in Samothrace. Sailors would see her from the water, a 9-foot marble announcement: "We won" She stood there for 2,000 years until she collapsed into pieces and was buried by landslides. French archaeologists found her in 1863, scattered across a hillside in 50+ pieces. They shipped her to Paris and reassembled her. No head. No arms. Held together with metal. But she's still one of the most powerful sculptures in the Louvre. Download @le__walk to learn the history behind more iconic pieces of art 📱 #paris #audiotour #History #art #parisculture
