People are always shocked when I say my babies start potty learning around 4 months old… but babies are SO much more intelligent and aware than we give them credit for We actually begin elimination communication from birth. In the first weeks of life, I start noticing their cues when they need to pee or poop. the sounds they make, their facial expressions, body movements, fussiness, timing after feeds, etc. Instead of immediately relying only on diapers, I let them associate the feeling of needing to go with actually going. In the newborn stage, I often use puppy pads and hold them over them when I notice their cues so they begin connecting the sensation with elimination. To me, it’s also about respect. I personally don’t love the idea of babies sitting in dirty diapers for long periods when they’re fully capable of communicating their needs from such a young age. The biggest misconception is that babies are “too little to understand,” but honestly, they learn SO quickly when you consistently respond to their cues. By around 10 months, my babies are usually fully out of diapers, and by 12 months they’re independently using the toilet with support 🫶🏻 It’s not about pressure or forcing them.
